I am really excited to be working on some projects to make my bedroom feel more homey this month! Today I am sharing the bedroom makeover before pictures, partially to help keep the fire lit under my butt and also because I think it’s fun to watch the progress.
I bought my house a year and two months ago. It’s a two story row-home with two bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms and a basement. I absolutely love it, but it is still not quite “home.”
A big part of why I chose this house was the fact it had been completely renovated – new floors, new appliances, equally sized bedrooms, a half bathroom on the first floor, a finished basement… These are all things that are REALLY hard to come by in Philly when your budget is not so big. They are all great things as a first time home-owner too, I don’t have to worry a ton about upkeep for now which means I can slowly adjust to the other responsibilities that come with owning a home. More on some of the steps I have taken to customize my room so far and where I’m heading after this kitty pic 🙂
The down side of having all the lovely new things, is that there is not a ton of character in the house and it feels very “just out of the box.” I desperately want to paint and get new light fixtures and hardware for the doors. To add a breakfast bar to the kitchen to make it feel more intentional, to build a faux fireplace to show the living room a little love… Seriously the list goes on forever. That said I have made a point to go slowly(and my wallet is thanking me, kind of.)
I mentioned a while back that I made some minor updates to my bedding that made my bedroom feel so much more comforting. This was a pretty big deal since I have pretty much ignored my bedroom since moving in 😀 From the start, I was trying to take the furniture from the one bedroom I had occupied in various houses over the course of three years and stretch it to fill a 986 square foot house. Needless to say, it felt empty for a LONG time. But I didn’t want to rush out and buy things just to fill it up, so I am very comfortable with the less-is-more thing that it turned in to. Now, I am getting ready to make some more changes!
Changes So Far
I have moved things around in my room three or four times now, and finally settled on my current layout (I’ll share in the after post, so stay tuned.) Oddly enough, there isn’t much photographic evidence of the experimentation :/
My biggest project in the room, so far, has been to make my closet a bit more organized. When I moved in there weren’t any shelves or hanging bars. Taking into account that I have a very strong dislike of using dressers, I was able to come up with a system that gave me enough storage in my closet not to need one – WIN! Phase one was to add the main shelf and bar. Phase two was to install a second shelf higher up for out of season clothes + two angled shoe shelves + one additional flat shelf for baskets of socks/underwear/bras and purses/miscellaneous items. I also moved my laundry hamper under my bed.
There are a few things that I want to do with this bedroom update. First, I want to add something to the room that gives it a little more depth. My bedroom is currently various shades of off-white and it’s a bit underwhelming. Second, I want to find a way to create space for my plant babies that will need to come in for the winter soon 🙂
I am thinking I am going to take over the wall in front of my bed with floor to ceiling shelves. Something that isn’t too intrusive so the lighting in the room is still nice and airy. It will be nice to have a place to put my plants and also some of the knick-knacks I have collected over the years that I just can’t part with 🙂 Stay tuned for the end result!
